Queer Parenting Windsor Pride Community celebrates and supports all Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning people, their same sex partners and children. The shape and form of the Canadian family has changed over time. Today there are many single parent families and other families headed by two parents. Some single parent and same sex couple families will be have children through previous marriages, adoption, foster parenting, donor insemination, invitro fertilization, surrogacy and other forms of contraception. There are Lesbian, Gay and Trans parents currently living in Windsor Essex.
Some LGBTIQ parents will have children who are infants, preschool, junior, high school, college and university aged and others who are grown and have children of their own. LGBTIQ parents share a common interest in providing for the best interest of their children. They will seek to provide stable family life and the benefits of loving and caring relationships. Like heterosexual parents, they will experience sleepless nights with infants, setting up play dates for kids, homework and exams, sports leagues, music concerts and summer holidays. Parents will often meet with their children?s teachers to introduce themselves.
Depending on the age of the parents, friends, grandparents and family of which you are a part, you may have witnessed in your lifetimes very significant milestones in human rights legislation in Canada including decriminalization of homosexuality in the Criminal Code, inclusion of sexual orientation in the Human Rights Code, and gay marriage. Much has changed in the media and society regarding the acceptance, and recognition of the contributions of LGBTIQ persons. Statistics Canada estimates the LGBTIQ population at 7% or 2,380,000 Canadians. Like all generations before us, change is inevitable and expected. Technology, media, social attitudes, and employment patterns in the period of one generation society have changed. Today Gay, Lesbian, Trans and Straight Parents in Canada share the same rights, freedoms and responsibilities.
Looking for support? In other communities like Toronto and Chicago, there are formal and informal support groups of LGBTIQ or Queer Parents. In Toronto Dykes with Tykes and Dads meet Saturday morning at the community centre called The 519. Windsor Essex parents are invited to use the Windsor Pride Community Centre mid week, evenings or weekends to share common experiences with each other. We are currently seeking some leadership for our own group. As LGBTIQ parents are spread over many Windsor neighbourhoods and schools, some parents currently feel isolated, and would welcome the opportunity to connect with other LGBTIQ parents. Some parents have asked for more programming for parents at the Summer Pride Festival. The Pride office welcomes your call to get involved. Building community is what Pride wants to do.
